For the second time in as many weeks UKCIA was hit by a hacker attack yesterday (Wednesday 12th). This was a widespread attack which seems to have targeted WordPress blogs such as this one on several hosts. UKCIA is hosted by US based Godaddy which seems to have suffered more than most from this attack but it has hit others such as Dreamhost.
The attack seems to have happened around 9.00am UK time. The site was clean at around 8.00am and found to be infected around 9.15 or so. We took the site offline as quickly as we could to prevent any more people being affected. The hack added malicious code to all the PHP pages on UKCIA – that’s just about all the pages across the whole site – which redirected to user to another website which looked for all the world like a virus protection warning, telling the victim to download “virus updates”.
ANYONE WHO DOWNLOADED THESE FAKE UPDATES NEEDS TO DO A VIRUS AND MALWARE SCAN AT ONCE
Before you run your scans of course, update your protection software.
This attack was very widespread and not restricted to UKCIA. It could be that many sites remain infected, although the scam site they redirected to has been closed down it’s not clear if the malicous code did anything else.
UKCIA is now cleaned and safe again, we apologise for what happened but it was beyond our control.
